Take on a new project now and you’ll be sitting pretty when spring returns, says Alan Titchmarsh By ALAN TITCHMARSH 00:01, Sat, Nov 22, 2014 1 Alan Titchmarsh, tips, winter, gardening, project, summerhouseGETTY Take on a new project now and you’ll be sitting pretty when spring returns There are those who regard the next few months as the closed season for gardening. The wellies are parked by the back door and probably won’t be dusted off until Easter, save for the odd walk to help digest the Sunday lunch. What a waste. I believe this is the time to put right those little niggles that have irritated you all year. In short, if your garden has bits that don’t work you have a calm four months in which to sort them out. For me, the back end of the year is a time for projects. While nature sleeps we have a chance to steal a march on her so that, when she wakes up, the lie of the land has been adjusted to show her off to perfection. So, can I get you to sign up to a project of your own over the next few months? It need not be dramatic. It might not involve gardening as such, but simply the installation of something that will make your garden more enjoyable. Alan Titchmarsh, gardeningGETTY This i the time to put right the little niggles that have irritated you all year We’ve put up an octagonal summerhouse and, in low and slanting shafts of winter sunshine, it is a great place to sit with a cup of coffee and read the papers. You need not go to such extravagant lengths to find somewhere to sit. Few gardens have enough benches, but then few keen gardeners have much time to sit down. Our gardens are there to be enjoyed, as well as tended. Choose a sturdy, hardwood bench and put it where you can enjoy a view of a bed or border. Perhaps you have a border that is the wrong shape, or one that offers little pleasure in winter. If so, tackle it now and add plants that look good in the garden centre. The spot of instant colour will be like a shot in the arm over the next few weeks and, come next year, the niggles will have vanished as if by magic. The garden out of bounds? Only for those without a jot of imagination. Don’t miss Alan’s gardening column in today’s Daily Express. For more informationon his range of gardening products, visit alantitchmarsh.com.
