Ways to Reduce Unwanted Backyard Noise

This article is intended to offer some suggestions to reduce those annoying sounds that intrude on a great backyard. Many of us like to relax after a long day at work or doing tasks around the home. Here are some ideas to block out road noise, noisy neighbors or that barking dog next door.
If you are fortunate to have enough space on your property, nothing much beats noise reduction like an earth berm. Strategically placed, this is one of the best structures to keep unwanted noise out. There are multiple websites available to show you where and how to construct a great berm.
There are also several commercial outdoor panels, curtains, sheets and barriers to reflect noise that you can purchase and install - although they are quite pricey and really not intended for the general homeowner. In both cases, you'll likely want to add some plants or other decor to jazz up the looks of a berm or a noise reflecting barrier.
Running water generates white noise, and is a great way to block out unwanted noise. Plus there is a relaxing, zen quality and ambience to the sound of splashing or trickling water. Pools with water features can mask the freeway noise or neighbors chatting next door. If your pool doesn't have a spillway or waterfall feature, you can easily and fairly cheaply (under $50) add a floating pool fountain and it's a ton of fun for the kids! Some even come with lights for a great evening show. Be sure to try it out and see if that does the trick.
In the same theme, a water fountain is easy to add to your backyard decor and can be a focal point for gatherings. A side benefit is they are wonderful for attracting different birds for your viewing pleasure and to help keep down the insect population!
Music outside is another common way to make a party more fun, while acting as a noise blocker at the same time. Or put on some relaxing tunes to chill at the end of a long day. An outdoor stereo system or just your smart phone can do the trick. This doesn't need to be loud music, something with a good base is best to dampen other sounds. Ever pull up behind a car that is vibrating with the radio turned up? Notice that what you mainly hear are those low base beats. Be sure to keep it reasonable so you don't become a problem for your neighbors.
Lastly, if it's just you and you're ready to enjoy your great backyard view, put on your noise blocking headphones, find a comfy seat, and plug into your personal device (phone, iPad, etc) to enjoy your favorite music, audio book, or an extended conversation with your favorite person.
Whether you just want to enjoy your own outdoor space, create a specific ambience, or have a fantastic gathering of family and friends, setting the stage by eliminating unwanted outside sounds can be achieved in different ways.
