But does that always have to be the case? Do dogs and fleas always have to be together? Is it possible to have a happy, healthy dog that doesn't have to fight with fleas? The answer is yes, but the details of fleas must be understood first. Fleas are parasites. They prefer animals over humans but will get a blood meal wherever they can find it. Birds, cows, even reptiles can be the next meal for these awful blood suckers. Unlike many pests, fleas actually do bite. (Mosquitoes and bed bugs actually insert a suction tube.) And all life cycles of these monsters requires blood. The adults will bite a host using multiple mouth parts - one bites and two others squeeze blood into the gut of the flea. They purge out some saliva which prevents the host blood from coagulating. And they always take way more blood than they need. The host will get an allergic reaction to the flea saliva, not the actual bite. And the reason they take additional blood is so they can poop it out quickly for the larva to feed on. Think about that for a minute, not only are these wretched pests blood suckers but their young feed on their poop! A very important fact many don't realize is that these parasites don't necessarily live on their host. They jump on your dog and get some food then drop off to lay eggs. The eggs can lay dormant for months waiting on the right temperature, humidity and proximity of their host to hatch. If your dog has a shady spot under the porch that is the favorite napping spot, you can bet everything on the fact that the spot is rife with all pest generations - eggs, larva and adults. Must your pets and these pests coexist? Absolutely not. Fido can easily have a flea-free existence now that you know about how fleas work. To rid your world of fleas, locate the napping spots and treat them. Use a safe, natural pest control product that will take care of all generations in the life cycle of fleas but is harmless to your dog. Treat the area thoroughly every day for 3 days, then drop back to every other day a few times. Within a week, you'll have controlled the fleas in that area. During this same treatment, you must take care of the dog too. Bathe your doggie in a safe, natural product that will penetrate the fur and kill adult fleas as well as the larva and eggs. Treat all indoor nap areas as well. Within one week, no more fleas! Louise Hodges is the owner of Greenbug which manufactures alternatives to synthetic chemical pesticides.
