The weather is nicer and the nightly temperatures are higher, making the spring and summer season prime time for raccoon activity. If you live near wooded or forested areas, or in an area that is known for nuisance raccoon interference, it is wise to do everything you can in order to protect your property from raccoon infestation and damage. This includes removing all food and water sources from the exterior of your home, keeping trash cans locked up and latched, sealing up vulnerable entry points in your roof and siding, and implementing non-harmful strategies to scare raccoons away. The most effective methods for scaring raccoons away involve safe and humane solutions like automatic lighting, ultrasonic sound machines, and of course, repellants. It is not recommended to purchase store-bought wildlife repellants because they may contain hazardous chemicals that can be dangerous for raccoons, pets, people, and plants. Instead, make your own raccoon repellant right from the comfort of your very own kitchen. Continue reading to learn a wonderful and effective raccoon repellent recipe that calls for organic ingredients like garlic and mineral oil. What You Will Need: 9 Cloves of Garlic Mineral Oil Ground Cayenne Pepper Plastic Spray Bottle Enclosed Glass Container Water Note: All of these ingredients you can purchase at either a grocery store or department store. Each item is inexpensive and easy to find. What to Do: Mince 3 ounces of fresh garlic cloves. You probably only need 6 or 7 cloves to get 3 ounces of minced garlic, but having extra on hand is always good. Combine the 3 ounces of minced garlic with 2 tablespoons of mineral oil in a glass container. Seal the glass container and let the mixture marinate for 24 hours. After 24 hours has passed, combine 16 ounces of water, 1 tablespoon of ground cayenne pepper, and 2 tablespoons of the garlic mixture in a plastic spray bottle. Shake it well. Put on your protective gloves (and eyewear if you have it) and spray the perimeter of your property with the solution. Also spray areas where you have actually seen raccoons. Avoid common areas and areas where your pets play. The cayenne pepper can irritate their eyes and nose. Note: Before spraying the perimeter of your property, be sure to test a small area of grass and plants to make sure your solution is not harmful. Re-apply the solution every 4 days, and after heavy rain. Keep the garlic mixture refrigerated for higher potency.
