This means that they do not live in colonies like the honeybee, which is considered a social bee. Although they do not live in a colony, it is not uncommon to find them living in close vicinity and at times, this can be a large number. Carpenter bees are thought to be docile insects, but the female of this specie can inflict painful stings. If you see a large number of carpet bees around it is important that you do a bee removal immediately. What do they look like? Carpenter bees are large with a hairy body and resemble bumblebees because of their size. The only real difference is that bumblebees do not have a hairy abdomen. A carpenter bee gets their name from building their nest in bamboo and dead wood. They drill holes in wood and commonly are found building nests in wooden decks and siding. If you notice any accumulation of sawdust around these structures, it could be a sign of a nest. Locating their nest If you see these bees frequenting a particular place you should try to find their nests. The holes they drill in wood is approximately a half-inch in diameter. If you see sawdust, you should check to see if you see any yellowish particles, which is the bee's excrement. The female is generally inside the nest while the male is often seen roaming around outside. Carpenter bee removal Once you have located the nest(s) you can do a carpenter bee removal or have a bee exterminator do the job. There are several methods, which you can try to remove the carpenter bees, which include: • Covering their nest-you need to be sure that you are using material that cannot be burrowed. This material can include wood putt, caulk, steel wool, or any type of sealant. To help prevent getting stung wear gloves and a face mask in addition to wearing long sleeve shirts and long pants. • Spray petrol-spray this into their nest but be very careful. This is a risky method as it is an inflammable substance. • Vacuum cleaner-you can use the vacuum cleaner to suck the bees from their nest but do it during dawn or dusk when the bees would usually be found inside their nest. Use the smallest attachment, fix it on the hole, and suck out the carpenter bees. Make sure that you seal the holes to the nest immediately. • Insecticides-there are many insecticides on the market that can be used for carpenter bee removal. You would need to apply it directly on the nest, making sure that you soak the nest, and then seal it. This article is penned by Lora Davis for Bee Man Dan.
