A Beginner's Guide To Lawn Striping

Mowing your turf the right way can help you have a more beautiful and attractive lawn. One of the mowing methods you can consider to achieve this goal is called lawn striping.
Lawn striping is a mowing technique that can help make your yard look professionally manicured. Stripes are considered by many a nice touch and they enhance the aesthetic appearance of lawns, golf courses, and yards in commercial properties. Through striping methods, you can use your mower to create interesting designs into your lawns such as a checkerboard or some diamond patterns.
The stripes that come from this mowing method are the results of a visual effect caused when the grass leaf blades are laid or bent over when you mow in opposite directions. Reflecting sunlight then gives the appearance of alternating light and dark green stripes. Grass blades that are bent in the direction you are mowing will appear as light green stripes while the blades bent toward you will have the appearance of a darker shade of green.
In general, all types of mowers can create stripes. The tires and deck of motor-powered mowers will bend grass in the direction it travels. However, if you want to create the best stripes, you need to equip your mower with rollers or a striping kit. According to landscaping experts, stripes created by mowers without rollers are less defined, won't last long, are not uniform, and the tire tracks are usually more prominent and hence, stand out.
At present, there are some commercial and residential rotary mowers that are outfitted with rollers, chains, or rubber flaps for striping which homeowners can use. Some lawn mowing brands also offer lawn striping kits as an aftermarket add-on. If you are in the process of shopping for and buying a good striping rotary mower, a valuable tip to follow is to get one that has a floating deck and a single roller that covers the length of the cutting deck.
The appearance of the stripes you will make on your grass depends on different factors. The first factor would be the type of grass you have. Landscaping experts say that cool-season grasses such as fescues and perennial ryegrass will yield better and more appealing stripes than warm-season grasses. Unfortunately, most warm-season grasses will not stripe very well or even not at all. However, it is still possible to stripe some warm-season grasses with some extra hard work.
Another factor that plays an important role in lawn striping is the health and condition of your turf. A healthy, thriving lawn with a dark green color will produce stripes that are great-looking and really noticeable.
Lastly, another factor to consider is the direction in which the sun hits the lawn. During certain times of day, the stripes will show up better. There will be times that the angle of the sun will make them invisible as well. The place where you will view the lawn from will also determine how well the stripes will show. As such, before taking on this mowing task, consider the typical light direction and viewing points when making your patterns.
