Raspberries, blackberries and hybrid berries such as Logan berries are easy to grow. Black berries will even produce decent crop if they are grown against a north facing wall. Raspberries crop needs a sunny, sheltered spot and a well drained but moisture retentive soil to do well. Raspberries dislike winter wet, so grow them on a ridge of top soil if your soil is heavy. Space plants 15 to 18 inches apart in the row. After planting, cut back the stems to about 12 inches, cutting just above the bud. The following spring cut back the old stem to ground level as new shoots emerge.
Raspberries can be grown against a free standing support or alongside a fence. The easiest form of support consists of stout posts at ten feet intervals along the row with horizontal fencing wire strung between the posts and held taut with tensioning bolts. Only two wires are needed, one running about 24 inches from the ground and the second at a height of about 4 feet. There are two types of raspberry, summer fruiting and autumn fruiting; By far the most common are the summer fruiting varieties, which bear fruit on canes produced the previous year.
Autumn fruiting raspberries, on the other hand, produce their fruit at the tips of the canes produced during the current season. Prune summer fruiting raspberries in early autumn by removing all shoots that have fruited back to ground level and tying in new shoots to the support. If there are too many shoots to space about 3 inches apart on the support, cut out the weakest. Autumn fruiting raspberry canes should be cut back to ground level after harvesting. New shoots produced from below ground in spring will bear fruit in the following autumn.
After planting, cut black currants back to a single bud above the ground. The following winter, remove any weak or misplaced growth. Subsequent pruning can take place either in winter or when harvesting. Remove dead and diseases stems and cut out up to a third of two year old or older wood. After planting a red or white currant bush, you need to cut back each main shoot by about half. During subsequent pruning, in summer, you need to aim to form an open bush. In winter, cut back all new growth on the main shoots and reduce the new growth on all side shoots to two buds. Remove any dead and diseases stems.
